Effective dent removal on vintage brass mandates precision tooling and a systematic approach to metal work. For the deepest, most acute damage on the Baritone’s bell curvature, the process began with stabilizing the horn on specialized mandrels. We employed traditional hammer and dollie techniques, paired with modern rod work utilizing dent balls, to slowly and carefully coax the brass back into its original contour. The primary technical challenge lies in relieving the localized stress points without causing metal thinning or distorting the overall geometry, a factor critical for maintaining the specific acoustic properties inherent in the Imperial design.
Once the physical indentations were meticulously erased, the focus shifted to refinement and surface preparation.
